Protocol Education is working closely with a welcoming primary school in BS7 to recruit an experienced SEN/SEMH Teaching Assistant to provide dedicated 1:1 support for a pupil with complex additional needs.

You'll play a key role in helping a young person feel safe, regulated, and able to engage positively with learning and school life.

The Role

As a 1:1 Teaching Assistant, you'll work closely with a pupil who requires bespoke support to access education successfully. You'll build a strong, professional relationship while maintaining clear boundaries and high expectations, creating an environment where the child can feel understood, valued, and empowered to succeed.

Working alongside teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals, you'll follow tailored support plans and implement strategies that promote emotional wellbeing, engagement, and positive outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide consistent 1:1 support for a pupil with complex SEN and SEMH needs.
• Use effective de-escalation techniques to support emotional regulation and behaviour management.
• Create a safe, structured, and predictable learning environment.
• Build a positive and trusting relationship with the pupil while maintaining professional boundaries.
• Support the implementation of individual learning and behaviour plans.
• Work collaboratively with teachers, SEN staff, and external agencies.
• Encourage emotional resilience, independence, and positive engagement with learning.
• Monitor progress and contribute to ongoing support strategies.

About You

We're looking for someone who can remain calm under pressure, see beyond behaviours, and genuinely wants to make a difference.

• Previous experience supporting children with SEN and SEMH needs.
• Confidence managing complex and challenging behaviour in a school setting.
• Strong understanding of trauma-informed and relational approaches.
• Patient, resilient, and emotionally intelligent.
• Able to build positive, trusting relationships with pupils.
• Consistent, calm, and professional in your approach.
• Passionate about supporting children who need additional guidance to thrive.

• Passport or proof of right to work in the UK.
• Two proofs of address, such as a driving licence, utility bill, or council tax statement.
• A CV covering the last 10 years of work or education, with any gaps explained.
• References covering the last two years, including education, childcare, or relevant support roles where applicable.
• An overseas police check if you have lived abroad for three months or more within the last five years.
